With backyard poultry farming becoming increasingly popular, people are now looking for a good cheap solution which can help keep their chicken while helping them clean their backyards clean of weeds and pests. Enter the Chicken Tractor; this is a simple easy to make wooden construct designed especially for the small scale poultry farmer who cannot invest in the bigger medium or large sized coops but will like a small solution to help him out.

A Chicken tractor is useful because...

Since it is a very light weight it is easy to move around. When a chicken is confined to a small area they will concentrate their activities there. As a result, they eat away the entire weed from the grass along with the bugs. They also provide fresh nitrogen rich manure to the soil. All you need to do is to move the tractor around your backyard frequently. Do not keep a tractor in one place for too long as chicken have a tendency to scratch away the soil and take sand baths. This can destroy a portion of your backyard if unchecked.

Making a Chicken tractor

A chicken tractor is usually 4 feet long and 3 feet wide while being around 3 feet high. All you will need to construct one is some lumber and chicken wire. Most Chicken tractors are also known as Chicken or Hen Arks. There are a few important considerations that you must take into account before you make your tractor, most of these are:

1. Provide at least 4 square feet per chicken so that they can have plenty of space to move and flap around.

2. Keep the tractor light enough so that you can move it around easily.

3. The tractor should not have a floor so that the chicken can reach the grass easily.

Of course if you have more birds then you can play around with the size of the coop.

Did you know that most people end up spending 100 to 200 dollars on a chicken tractor while they could have easily done that in around 50? A little before hand learning and good ol' planing can go a long way into making your experience more worthwhile. On my page on Chicken Tractor Plans I have discussed various things that you need to keep in mind when you are making making your chicken tractor. You need to be careful about what size you make your tractor, what you equip it with, and finally how to keep those pesky predators out.
