Build Chicken Coops

Build Chicken Coops

Aside from providing your family with fresh eggs every day, raising chickens can be fun. If you decide to keep a small flock of hens, you will have to keep them in a chicken coop where they can be protected against predators and be sheltered from rain or snow. You will be pleasantly surprised to discover that it is easy to build a chicken coop. There are many simple chicken pen plans available online and you can use these plans as a guide to make a home for your birds.

By following these instructions, it will be easy to build a chicken coop:

1. Determine the proper size for the coop.

Provide enough space in the chicken house so that your birds will be comfortable. Plan on having 4 square feet of space per chicken, and the height of the coop must be at least 3 feet.

2. Provide proper ventilation and sufficient light.

Chickens need fresh air to keep healthy. They also need sunlight and must have at least 14 hours of light every day to continue laying eggs even in the winter.

3. Make sure the coop is easy to clean.

Design the coop so that you will be able to clean it easily. This will help keep your chickens from getting sick because of unsanitary living conditions.

4. Place feeders and waterers in the coop.

It will be easy to feed your chickens and give them water if your chicken coop has provisions for feeders and waterers.

5. Make sure your birds have a roosting perch and nesting boxes.

Chickens prefer to perch on a roosting pole when they sleep. Nesting boxes are necessary when your chickens start to lay eggs.

These are some of the basic elements that you must include when you build a chicken coop. Find simple designs and easy-to-follow plans to help you when you make a coop for your hens.

How to build a small and cheap chicken coop?

Building a coop should be cheaper to buy a ready made one. I think if there's a guide or instruction, building a coop will be easier. Can u teach me?

I just made this in December. There are tons of pictures and step by step
descriptions in this handbook. Check with local hardware or lumber stores for
damaged wood or pallets to use and save some $ buying these. Also, check with home
remodelers for new scrap they might give you. For 10 chickens, that is a total of
20 sq.ft. , so you could build a 4' x 5' coop. with at least two roosts. If you are
getting them this winter, make sure you add a heat lamp to keep them from getting
sick. In a word, this handbook will show u how to make a perfect coop:) Good luck!
