Raising chickens are a great way to supply your family with healthy organic eggs and meat. Don’t worry about needing a lot of chickens. It only takes a few chickens to have a daily fresh supply of eggs for your house hold.
Chicken houses can be built in all different sizes and shapes. The main points you want to consider when building chicken houses is safety for your chickens, and making it easy to clean up after them.
There are two things that you are keeping your chickens safe from. That is preditors and the outside elements.
The Elements
When you are building your chicken coop, you want to face the most open part of the chicken coop facing the sun if you can. This will help in the cold seasons to keep your chickens warm and dry.
If you have any dips in your yard, do not build the chicken coop there. You want to make sure you have ample drainage during the rainy season. Make sure you know if your yard has areas that collect puddles of water and avoid these spots.
Preditors
Chicken wire comes in different gauges…from about 19 to 22 gauge. The heavier the gauge the better, for there security. If you have coyotes or bob cats in your area they will need the best security that you can give them. Using galvanized is fine for chickens as chicken do not normally chew on the wire.
Easy Clean Up
Building your chicken house in a way that is easy to clean up will be important to you when it comes time to clean out the coop. A slightly slanted flooring helps for housing out the coop so that the water can run outward. Cleaning should be done at least a couple times a year.
