Simple Chicken Coops

Simple Chicken Coops

Birds are great to keep as pets, but getting everything ready to ensure that you can look after them correctly can some times be a pain. A poultry house is usually the largest expense, so a lot of people try to find chicken coop plans and do it themselves. Here is the important thing that needs to be understood by all; building a chicken coop is not hard at all. In fact, no previous DIY experience is needed to be able to construct one correctly.

Maintaining A Poultry House

Maintenance can be a pain, but in reality it is something that has to be done, there is really no way around it. When building the poultry house using chicken coop plans, it is always a good idea to ensure that it is designed in such a manner that makes it easy to maintain.

Here is a quick example; make sure that the floor of the coop slopes slightly downwards and towards the door. When cleaning with fluids, it will ensure that it runs out and dries a lot quicker than it would do otherwise.

Deciding on The Size

Chickens like to roam around, or at least feel comfortable in the space they are in. If they do not feel like they have enough space, then they are likely to want to attack each other, or at least become aggressive towards each other.

Here is something to take into account; each chicken is going to need around 4 square foot of room. This is to ensure that they do not get aggressive towards each other and are comfortable at all times.

Protection; Weather and Predators

Two things that can really affect your birds are the following; predators and also weather. When constructing a house using chicken coop plans, some methods to make it more weather proof and predator proof might pop into your head.

The most obvious thing to do to stop it flooding would be the build it high up. The easiest way to do this would be to build legs onto the bottom of the coop. Installing a drainage system would also help. The likes of hard materials and wire mesh could help protect your chickens from any predators. Make sure you take the time to construct the coop in a secure manner.

What kind of things should I have in my chicken house to make things easier for me.?

I want to make things as easy and simple for me with this new chicken coop. What ideas do you have regarding nests, roosts, clean up, and best types of friendly egg laying hens. I want to have up to 20 hens.

Hi im Waine, Genral poultryman at the largest farm in the county. Genraly in a small coop I would have the following, Feeders and waterers (two 5 gallon waterers for 20 hens, be preepared to spend 60 to 70 dollars on those alone) A nest box can ordered online for about 70 dollars from factory dealers, and house up to 10 chickens per nest box frame. Pine needles make for easy nest clean up, as they mat together then you simply take a spade and shovel them out and replace them, and it keeps the red mites off of your birds Have a water faucet in or close to your coop for easy water filling. Also have your feed in a metal trash can close by.You may also consider a small bevrage refrigerator to keep meds in so they do not spoil. This is how we would set up a small side coop if you have questions contact me at yrbirdraisers@yahoo.com
sincerely, Waine
