Why is the chicken run so filthy?

I have 5 chickens in my run. The coop is 5x4, so it's big enough following the 4sq foot each. The coop stays pretty clean. I use pine shavings, but am about to switch to playground sand mixed with pine shavings to absorb moisture since there is a humidity spike this time of year. The run is 20x10 and is 180 sq feet. The coop is inside the run, not connected, so it takes away some space. My question is why is there so much poop in the run. My oldest pullet in there is 8 months and the others are 12-14 weeks. I expected there to be some poop, but this is CRAZY. I have "coop" shoes and I am afraid to even wash them off. If you look at it you'd expect 20 chickens lived in there. According to the little 10 sq foot ideal, there is plenty of run space. Anyone have ideas? Should I lave a layer of sand so I can just rake up the poo?
They are pets. Please no ignorant responces. I know there will be poop, but I am thinking maybe too much fiber and scratch in their diet???

We have 9 Batman chickens, their main run is 30' x 20' and we rake it about every 2 weeks. Chickens poop a lot in general. Ours are all health and just turned 6 years old this past April.
