Chicken Coops Backyard

Chicken Coops Backyard

If you keep chickens in your yard, then building a chickens coop should be a top priority for you. Chickens need protection from the elements and predators in order to produce the best eggs, and a chicken house will provide just that. Here are three tips on putting a coop in your backyard.

1) Good lighting is very important.

The easiest way to ensure your coop is well lit is to build it with large windows and position it so that those windows face south. South facing windows will provide exposure to the sun all day long, ensuring maximum sunlight enters the coop throughout the day. Electric lighting can also be installed which will both light the coop and also help warm it in the winter months.

2)  Use quality materials to ensure predators are kept out.

Predators are a huge threat to your chickens. Weasels, racoons, foxes, and other animals are all hungry and more than willing to pick off one of your flock. When you build your coop, make sure to use top quality materials. Use heavy, strong wire to protect the windows, and make sure your door is solid and can't be opened by an animal.

3) Position your coop at a high point, and make sure to consider drainage.

Building the coop at a high point in your yard will make sure precipitation drains away from the coop and not into it. Another good tip is to built the floor with a slight angle towards the door. A very slightly tilted floor will ensure that any water inside the coop naturally drains out. This will make cleaning the coop much easier.

Following these three tips will help ensure that your chickens are kept safe from the elements and predators, which will in turn keep them producing high quality eggs. For the absolute best result, invest in a good coop construction manual, which will provide you with professional plans and coop designs that are proven winners.

Infectious Chicken Coop?

So, there's a chicken coop in my backyard. I'm afraid of infectious bacteria and fungus coming from the chicken poop and dead chickens. It flooded a little while ago and they drown. How can I get rid of the whole chicken coop, and have it be safe?

You need someone to come in with skid loader and tear the whole thing down. Bring in fresh black dirt, and re-seed the area with grass seed.
