Chicken Houses Yorkshire
With the holidays soon upon us, it is time to think about your dog's health during this time of year. It is always tempting to give your dogs, even small dogs such as Yorkshire terriers, bones to gnaw on while you are cooking the holiday feast. These bones can be harmful or even fatal to your dog. Here are three reasons why giving your dog a bone to chew on is never a good idea and may be dangerous to his health.
- Your dog can easily choke on any small objects, such as a ball, chew toy, or other, seemingly harmless item. Bones are even riskier, due to their sharp edges and slippery sides. Even if you see that your dog is choking on something, you may be unable to dislodge the item in time to save his life.
- Bones have splinters that will separate from the bone while your dog is chewing on it. These splinters can easily puncture your dog's throat, esophagus, stomach, or intestines, causing internal bleeding and probable death. This is a painful experience for any dog and could result in necessary surgery to try to save his life.
- Certain breeds of dogs, such as Yorkies, have strong jaws that will enable them to crush the bones with their teeth. This can lead to chipped or broken teeth that will keep your dog from eating food easily.
The best thing to do is to keep your dog away from any kind of bones, including bones from chicken, beef, or pork. Give him synthetic bones or other pet safe toys to chew on. You will be glad you took this precaution with your beloved pet.
